Hope Behind Bars: Group Unveils Renovated NOUN and NABTEB Study Centres in Keffi Correctional Centre
A non-governmental organisation, Hope Behind Bars Africa, in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service and development partners, has commissioned renovated and fully equipped study centres for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The project, implemented under the Civic Accord Project with support from the Royal Norwegian Embassy, is aimed at strengthening access to education and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates within the correctional centre.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Programme Manager of Hope Behind Bars Africa, Hassan Nurudeen, said the intervention reflects a broader commitment to transforming correctional centres into environments of learning, rehabilitation, and reintegration rather than mere detention facilities.
He explained that the renovation covered extensive structural upgrades, including repairs to classrooms, electrical installations, lighting systems, and the provision of learning infrastructure designed to support both academic and vocational training.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, which emphasises rehabilitation and reintegration as key objectives of the correctional system.

Nurudeen noted that the organisation also equipped the centres with computers, furniture, books, and learning materials to enhance access to quality education for inmates preparing for examinations and tertiary studies.
Representatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service at the event commended the intervention, describing it as a significant contribution to inmate welfare and rehabilitation efforts. They stressed that education remains a critical tool for reducing recidivism and supporting successful reintegration into society.
Officials further highlighted that the upgraded facilities will expand access to structured learning programmes for inmates, including those pursuing secondary, technical, and university-level qualifications through NOUN and NABTEB.

The Keffi custodial centre is expected to benefit hundreds of inmates who will now have improved access to formal education, vocational training, and examination preparation as part of ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Correctional Service system.
