Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) and five other Nigerian universities have emerged as winners of the maiden Rite Foods National Academic Excellence Awards, in collaboration with JAMB, taking home a combined ₦35 million in recognition of their outstanding academic performance during the 2025 admission exercise.
The awards, organised by Rite Foods in partnership with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), were presented on Tuesday at the Civic Centre, Lagos, to celebrate the best-performing matriculated students selected from Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, alongside one beneficiary from JAMB's Equal Opportunity Group for Persons with Disabilities.
According to the organisers, the recipients were selected after an aggregate assessment of their performance in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), and post-UTME or other institutional screening exercises.

Addressing the award recipients, the Minister of Education encouraged them to remain committed to excellence and use their knowledge to contribute to national development.
"Be innovators, researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs needed to solve the problems of the nation."
He added that the Federal Government remains committed to building an education system that rewards merit and produces graduates capable of competing globally.
Speaking at the ceremony, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, commended Rite Foods for adopting a selection process that evaluates candidates beyond their UTME scores.
"What is unique about Rite Foods' initiative is that they are celebrating matriculated students. Many people with high UTME scores are never admitted because they do not have the required combination of UTME and SSCE results."
According to Oloyede, recognising students based on their overall admission performance provides a more accurate measure of academic excellence than relying solely on UTME scores.
The awards are expected to encourage academic excellence among prospective university students while promoting merit-based recognition in Nigeria's tertiary education system.
