Benjamin Kalu Calls for Bold Reforms of the Nigerian Education System as NECO Marks 25 Years

At the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the National Examinations Council (NECO) held on May 7, 2026, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, presented a lead paper on behalf of Speaker Rt. Hon. He noted that as NECO marks 25 years of existence, the examination body deserves both commendation and critical evaluation, considering the millions of Nigerian students who have depended on it as a gateway to education and employment opportunities.

According to him, Nigerians deserve an assessment system that accurately reflects candidates’ competence, enjoys global recognition, and preserves the principles of merit and fairness.

The Deputy Speaker further reaffirmed the House of Representatives' commitment to using its legislative, oversight, and appropriation powers to modernise the nation’s examination system, tackle examination malpractice, and build a credible assessment framework that earns Nigerians' trust.
