Wrong Subjects, Wrong Sitting, Wrong Choice: The Admission Requirements Mistakes That Cost Nigerian Students a Full Year

Wrong Subjects, Wrong Sitting, Wrong Choice: The Admission Requirements Mistakes That Cost Nigerian Students a Full Year

In Nigerian university admissions, the difference between gaining a place and losing an entire year is rarely dramatic. It is not usually a catastrophic JAMB failure or a Post-UTME disaster. More often, it is something smaller: a subject that was missing, a sitting that did not qualify, a first-choice selection that was never confirmed, a document uploaded incorrectly on a portal.

These are preventable mistakes. Every one of them and yet they eliminate thousands of otherwise qualified candidates every admission season.

These are the most common errors and exactly how to avoid them.

*Mistake 1: Wrong UTME Subject Combination for Your Course

This is the error that ends applications before they begin. JAMB assigns specific approved subject combinations to every course at every accredited institution. Selecting the wrong subjects in UTME even one wrong subject can disqualify a candidate from admission regardless of their score.

Many candidates lose their admission every year because they chose the wrong UTME subjects. Choosing an incorrect subject combination for a course will automatically disqualify you, even if you score very high in JAMB. Universities rely on the subject requirements approved by JAMB, and candidates who do not meet them are not considered for admission at all.

A common example: candidates applying for Medicine who assume Mathematics can replace Physics in their UTME combination. Physics is compulsory for Medicine and Surgery. Mathematics cannot replace it.

How to avoid it: Always verify your UTME subject combination against the JAMB brochure for your specific course and institution before registration, not after

*Mistake 2: O'Level Credits That Do Not Match Course Requirements

Having five O'Level credits is the baseline requirement. But the subjects those credits are in must align specifically with the requirements of your chosen course.

A candidate for Engineering who has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Literature may meet the general five-credit requirement but if Chemistry is required for their specific Engineering programme and is missing from their result, their application will not progress.

A single missing or wrong grade can cost you your admission. Ensure your O'Level results are complete, correctly combined if from two sittings, and properly uploaded.

How to avoid it: Cross-reference your O'Level subjects against your course's specific requirements in the JAMB brochure. Do not assume that any five credits will do.

*Mistake 3: Combining Results Across Two Sittings for a One-Sitting Course

As covered in detail here certain universities and courses require all required O'Level credits to come from a single examination sitting. Submitting combined results from two sittings for these courses results in disqualification, regardless of how competitive the aggregate score is.

Top institutions such as UNILAG, UI, and LASU only accept one sitting for competitive courses like Medicine, Law, and Nursing Science.

How to avoid it: Confirm your target institution's sitting policy for your specific course before submitting your application. Do not rely on the general JAMB policy to check the institution's own requirements.

*Mistake 4: Not Selecting the Right First Choice on JAMB

Post-UTME registration forms are released by Nigerian tertiary institutions for candidates who selected the school as their first choice in JAMB or later changed to the institution. This means that if your desired institution is not your JAMB first choice, you may be ineligible to register for their Post-UTME regardless of your score.

Many students select a "safe" first choice during JAMB registration and plan to change it later. Some succeed. Others miss the change window, discover it too late, or find that their preferred institution's Post-UTME registration has already closed by the time the change is processed.

Many students learn about this first-choice requirement too late. They show up to register for screening only to discover they're ineligible because of their JAMB choice.

How to avoid it: Check your JAMB registration slip right now to confirm your first choice. If it needs to change, begin that process immediately through your JAMB profile. Do not wait until Post-UTME registration opens.

*Mistake 5: Failing to Upload O'Level Results on JAMB CAPS

Uploading your O'Level results to the JAMB Central Admissions Processing System is a non-negotiable step in the admission process. Many candidates complete their Post-UTME registration and assume this step is handled only to find their application stalled because their results are not uploaded or are uploaded incorrectly.

Candidates must upload results on JAMB CAPS or risk disqualification. Some institutions go further: only candidates who have uploaded their O'Level results on JAMB CAPS before the stated deadline will be considered for admission.

How to avoid it: Log into your JAMB profile now and confirm your O'Level results are uploaded, complete, and clearly visible. If you are awaiting results, note the deadline your target institution has set for result upload and plan accordingly.

Mistake 6: Delaying Acceptance After Admission Is Offered

This mistake happens after admission is secured and it is more common than it should be. Once an admission offer appears on JAMB CAPS, candidates are expected to accept it within a specified window. Students who wait sometimes hoping for an offer from a more preferred institution can lose their offer entirely.

Many people lose out just because they waited too long to click "accept."

How to avoid it: Monitor your JAMB CAPS account consistently during admission list release periods. The moment an offer appears, make a decision and act on it promptly.

One Final Thought

None of these mistakes requires exceptional intelligence to avoid. They require attention, verification, and the discipline not to assume. Every requirement listed above is publicly available in the JAMB brochure, on institutional websites, and on JAMB CAPS itself.

The students who lose admission years to these errors are not less capable than those who get in. They are simply less informed at the moment it matters most.

Do not let that be you.
