WAEC Workers Demand Sack of HNO Amid Rising Crisis in Nigeria
The crisis within the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has escalated, as workers under the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have demanded the immediate removal of the Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut.
The call follows a series of unresolved industrial disputes between the union and WAEC management, which have already triggered warning protests and heightened tension within the examination body.
According to union leaders, the demand for the HNO’s sack has become central to their grievances after prolonged negotiations failed to yield a consensus on key welfare and administrative issues affecting staff.
According to NASU leadership, the decision to call for the HNO’s sack was reached after a lengthy negotiation session with management ended in deadlock. The union described the meeting as exhaustive but ultimately unproductive.

Speaking on the development, the WAEC branch chairman of NASU, Kayode Ogunyade, said workers had exhausted all internal resolution channels before taking the position. He disclosed that during the negotiations, “we started the meeting around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and ended around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, with three recesses, yet only five minor issues were addressed.”
He added that while the union initially raised several demands relating to staff welfare, promotion, recruitment practices, and working conditions, management’s response was insufficient, leaving most of the issues unresolved.
Ogunyade further explained that workers believe the situation has deteriorated beyond repair under the current leadership, stating that “our number 13 agenda — which is for him to go — has now become the only agenda before us.”

He insisted that the union had formally communicated its position to its national leadership, adding that members were no longer willing to continue with the current arrangement.
On its part, WAEC management has maintained that discussions with the union are still ongoing and has expressed surprise over the escalation of the matter. The HNO, Dr. Amos Dangut, reportedly noted that engagement with the union had not been exhausted and directed further enquiries to the council’s Public Affairs Department.
The industrial tension comes at a sensitive time, as WAEC continues to conduct the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across member countries, raising concerns about possible disruptions if the dispute is not resolved.
NASU has stated that its next line of action will depend on directives from its national leadership, as both parties remain at an impasse over the unresolved issues.
