NUT and JAMB Join Forces to Reform Teacher Education, Demand Better Welfare

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have called for a stronger, more structured approach to teacher education in Nigeria, alongside renewed attention to the welfare of educators at all levels.

This was disclosed during a joint engagement aimed at addressing gaps in the country’s teacher development system and improving the quality of education delivery nationwide.

According to the stakeholders, strengthening teacher education remains central to achieving better learning outcomes, noting that no education system can exceed the quality of its teachers. They stressed the need for improved training standards, continuous professional development, and better alignment between teacher preparation institutions and national education goals.

The collaboration also highlighted growing concerns around the welfare of teachers, with calls for improved remuneration, working conditions, and recognition of the teaching profession as a critical pillar of national development.

JAMB, while engaging with education stakeholders, reiterated its commitment to policies that support quality admission processes into teacher education programmes, ensuring that only qualified candidates are admitted into colleges of education and related institutions.

The NUT, on its part, urged relevant authorities to prioritise the teaching profession through reforms that make it more attractive to young Nigerians, warning that neglect of teachers’ welfare could continue to weaken the education sector.

They concluded that investing in teachers remains one of the most effective ways to secure the future of education in Nigeria.
