The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Dantani Wushishi, has been elected Vice-President of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).
Nigeria has also secured the right to host the association’s 2027 conference in Abuja.
The AEAA General Assembly endorsed the two decisions at the conclusion of its 42nd Conference in Arusha, Tanzania.
In a statement signed by NECO’s Acting Director, Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the Council said Wushishi’s election further strengthens Nigeria’s position in Africa’s educational assessment community.
Wushishi’s election follows his previous service on the AEAA Executive Council as the representative of the West African sub-region.

The development comes as African countries increasingly explore technology, digital testing and artificial intelligence to improve examination administration and educational assessment.
Since becoming NECO Registrar in 2021, Wushishi has overseen reforms aimed at modernising the council’s examination processes, expanding its technological infrastructure and increasing its international presence.
According to NECO, the council now conducts examinations in eight foreign countries under his leadership.
Nigeria’s successful bid to host the 2027 AEAA Conference is also expected to provide an opportunity for the country to showcase its reforms in educational assessment and discuss emerging challenges in testing and certification.

The conference, held August 16 to 20, 2027, in Abuja, was expected to attract policymakers, researchers, examination administrators, and education experts from across Africa.
The event will also focus on developments in educational assessment, including the growing application of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in examinations.
NECO said Wushishi’s election, alongside Nigeria’s successful bid to host the conference, would give the country a stronger voice in shaping the future of educational assessment across the continent.
