The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised prospective candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) to verify the accuracy of their National Identification Number (NIN) records before commencing registration.
The Board issued the advisory in its recent “JAMB Explained” series, urging candidates to carefully review their personal information with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) before creating their JAMB profiles.
“Before you create your JAMB profile to register for the UTME or Direct Entry, take a moment and carefully check to confirm that your name, date of birth, and any other details linked to the NIN are correct. Why?”
JAMB specifically asked candidates to check the spelling and arrangement of their names, date of birth, and other personal information attached to their NIN records.

The Board explained that the details displayed on a candidate’s JAMB profile are sourced directly from the NIN database and are not independently created or entered by JAMB.
“JAMB does not create or edit your details. They come directly from your NIN record with NIMC.”
According to the Board, candidates who discover errors in their NIN information should not assume that obtaining an affidavit will automatically result in a change to their JAMB profile.
“Getting an affidavit won’t automatically make JAMB to update your record.”
JAMB advised candidates with incorrect information to first follow the appropriate procedure with NIMC to correct their records before proceeding with JAMB profile creation and examination registration.

The Board also stressed the importance of ensuring that information used for JAMB registration matches the records held by NIMC, particularly candidates’ names and dates of birth.
Candidates who need to correct information on their JAMB records can use the Board’s Correction of Data process for applicable details, including names, date of birth, state or local government of origin and gender. Such corrections are subject to the relevant procedures and applicable fees.
JAMB urged prospective UTME and DE candidates to resolve any discrepancies early to avoid unnecessary complications during registration and the admission process.
The Board noted that verifying personal information before registration can help candidates prevent avoidable issues that may arise from inconsistencies between their NIN and JAMB records.
