What began as a signout celebration of the end of secondary school has ended in disciplinary action for 17 graduating students in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Government has withheld the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials of the affected students after they were identified in a viral video showing acts of misconduct during post-examination celebrations.
The students, drawn from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School in Akure, were reportedly seen tearing their school uniforms, chanting slogans, and causing disorder in parts of the state capital shortly after completing their final examination papers.
The incident, which gained widespread attention on TikTok and Facebook, sparked public criticism and prompted an emergency meeting involving education officials, school administrators, parents, and the affected students.
Speaking during the disciplinary session, the Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, announced a series of sanctions against the students and school officials involved.

According to him, the names of the 17 graduating students will be recorded in the official misconduct register, otherwise known as the “black book,” of their respective schools.
He also revealed that principals across the state have been directed to establish similar records for student misconduct, while senior officers in the affected schools have been issued official queries for failing to prevent the situation from escalating.
Ajibefun stated:
"For those in the video who are not in the terminal class, the Ministry has directed that they be expelled from school immediately."
The Commissioner urged parents to intensify efforts in guiding their children and discouraging behaviours that could negatively affect their future opportunities.

He stressed that the disciplinary measures are intended to serve as a warning to other students who may be tempted to engage in similar acts.
While acknowledging that students naturally feel excited after completing their final examinations, Ajibefun maintained that celebrations must remain orderly and responsible.
"The growing ‘sign-out’ culture among secondary school students must be guided by decency."
"We will not fold our arms and watch the discipline we have painstakingly instilled in our schools be eroded for the sake of social media clout."
"We must defend the integrity of our education system in the state. We will not allow those who are not ready to be in school to disturb our institutions."
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Akindele Ige, advised school principals to promptly report emerging disciplinary concerns to the Zonal Education Office and the Ministry before such situations spiral out of control.
The Ministry further disclosed that the affected students and their parents have been summoned to receive official punishment letters, as the government moves to reinforce discipline and responsible conduct within the state's education system.
