Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended the Federal Government for suspending the proposed increase in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination fees.
The governor described the decision as a “thoughtful intervention” that would reduce the financial pressure on millions of Nigerian families and improve access to education for students across the country.
Yusuf’s commendation was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, on Wednesday in Kano.
The governor spoke while presenting appointment letters to 4,900 newly recruited teachers for basic and secondary schools in the state, alongside the engagement of 3,688 Abba Gida-Gida BESDA Cohort V facilitators.
According to the statement, Yusuf said the suspension of the NECO's fee increase reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting students and promoting affordable education.

The Kano governor further commended the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for their efforts towards improving inclusive education nationwide.
Yusuf noted that the timely release of UBEC counterpart funds had contributed to the construction, renovation, and improvement of schools, as well as the implementation of other basic education projects across Kano State.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, NECO, UBEC, and other education agencies to improve learning outcomes.

The Federal Government had earlier suspended the planned review of NECO examination fees following widespread concerns from parents, students, and education stakeholders over the possible impact of the increase on access to secondary school examinations.
The proposed adjustment would have raised examination costs significantly, prompting calls for reconsideration from various groups across the country.
