The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) has reaffirmed that candidates with disabilities gain admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions under the same requirements as every other applicant, stressing that no special concessions are granted during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for this set of candidates.
Speaking on Wednesday at the National Stakeholders' Engagement on Inclusivity and Higher Education held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja, JEOG Chairman, Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, said all candidates, regardless of disability, sit for the same UTME, answer identical questions and are evaluated using the same admission criteria.
"We do not lower standards for these candidates. They sit for the same UTME, answer the same questions and are assessed by the same standards as every other candidate," Okebukola stated.
According to him, the Equal Opportunity Group has facilitated access to higher education for 4,216 candidates with disabilities over the past decade, with an average of 53 per cent of beneficiaries securing admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education each year.

He noted that the milestone coincides with the 10th anniversary of JEOG, an initiative established by the outgoing JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, to expand access to tertiary education for persons with disabilities and ensure equal opportunities within Nigeria's admission process.
Okebukola also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting inclusive education, saying emerging technologies would help improve learning experiences and accessibility for persons with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups in higher institutions.

He disclosed that the first cohort under the initiative consists of 96 students below the age of 16.
The event also featured the presentation of a commemorative publication titled A Peep into the Future of Higher Education in Nigeria, which explores emerging trends and the future direction of tertiary education in the country.
