Meet Damilola Odukoya, UNILAG Alumna Who Wrotes JAMB at 37, Became Medical Doctor

A University of Lagos (UNILAG) alumna, Dr Damilola Odukoya, has become a medical doctor after returning to write the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination at the age of 37.

Odukoya had initially written JAMB almost two decades earlier but later returned to pursue her ambition of studying Medicine.

She eventually gained admission to study Medicine at the University of Lagos at a time when she was already married, a mother of three, and working as a laboratory technician in a hospital.

Her decision to return to school meant combining medical education with family responsibilities. At the time, she had three children, including a baby who was less than a year old.

Odukoya also had to take study leave from her job as a laboratory technician to concentrate on her medical studies. Being older than most of her classmates, she was reportedly fondly called “Mummy” by some of the younger students.

Despite the demands of medical school, motherhood, and other responsibilities, Odukoya remained committed to completing her education.

Her husband, Abiodun Odukoya, also supported and encouraged her throughout the journey.

After years of study and perseverance, Odukoya graduated from the University of Lagos College of Medicine in 2022, achieving her goal of becoming a medical doctor.
