NABTEB Registrar Applauds Edo Government’s Investment in Technical Education, Urges More Support for TVET

As Nigeria intensifies efforts to build a skilled workforce capable of driving industrial growth and economic transformation, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, has praised the Edo State Government for its commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The NABTEB boss described technical education as one of the most effective tools for technological advancement, wealth creation, entrepreneurship, and economic self-reliance.

Dr. Mohammed made the remarks during an examination monitoring visit to Benin Technical College, Benin City, and Christlike School at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp, Uhogua, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The visits formed part of the ongoing monitoring exercise for the 2026 NABTEB May/June In-School National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC) examinations, according to a statement issued by Uchechukwu Olisah, Assistant Director (Media/Protocol), NABTEB.

During the visit, the Registrar called on governments, private sector players, development partners, and other stakeholders to increase investments in technical and vocational education to accelerate national development and create more opportunities for young Nigerians.

“Technical and Vocational Education remains a critical pathway to technological advancement, wealth creation and economic self-reliance. Greater investment in the sector is necessary to guarantee sustainable economic growth and national development.”

Dr. Mohammed explained that the monitoring exercise was not only aimed at assessing the conduct of the examinations but also provided an opportunity to evaluate facilities, engage school administrators, and explore areas of collaboration that could strengthen technical education across the country.

At Benin Technical College, where he was received by the Principal, Elder Friday Izedonmwen, alongside an official of the Edo State Technical and Vocational Education Board, Mrs. Stella Ogbeide, the NABTEB Registrar encouraged students to embrace technical education as a practical response to unemployment and economic challenges.

“Technical and Vocational Education offers young people a pathway to productive employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance. It remains one of the most effective solutions to unemployment, poverty, restiveness and underdevelopment.”

He also urged the institution to align with the National Skills Qualification (NSQ) framework, noting that NABTEB serves as one of the General Awarding Bodies under the programme.

“The National Skills Qualification framework provides learners with opportunities for career progression, industry relevance and international recognition. Institutions should take full advantage of its benefits.”

Following an inspection of the college’s workshops and departments, including Automobile Technology, Welding and Fabrication, Carpentry and Joinery, and Catering, Dr. Mohammed commended the quality of infrastructure and practical learning facilities available in the institution.

He described Benin Technical College as a centre with impressive potential, equipped with modern facilities and talented students capable of contributing significantly to Nigeria’s technological future.

“The students have demonstrated remarkable technical creativity and potential. With the right support and continuous investment, institutions like this can play a major role in driving Nigeria’s technological and economic transformation.”

While praising the Edo State Government for its substantial investment in the college, he noted that additional improvements could further elevate the institution to the rank of the nation’s leading technical colleges.

The NABTEB Registrar later visited Christlike School at the Uhogua IDP Camp, where he was received by the Principal, Mrs. Victoria Uche, and the examination supervisor, Mr. Peace Alihe.

Addressing candidates at the centre, he encouraged them to remain committed to their studies and take advantage of the opportunities that technical education offers.

“Stay focused on your education and continue to develop your skills. Technical education can open doors to countless opportunities and help you achieve your aspirations.”

He further reassured the students of the value and credibility of NABTEB qualifications, emphasizing that the certificates are recognised and respected in various sectors.

“NABTEB certificates possess immense value and can serve as a gateway to greater opportunities. They equip graduates with practical skills that can lead to self-employment, meaningful careers and economic independence.”

According to him, skilled artisans, craftsmen, and technicians remain highly sought after both within and outside Nigeria, often earning competitive incomes in developed economies.

“Holders of NABTEB certificates can become self-employed and even employers of labour. Across the world, skilled professionals are in high demand and play a crucial role in economic development.”

Dr. Mohammed reaffirmed NABTEB’s commitment to promoting quality technical and vocational education and ensuring that graduates acquire the practical competencies needed to compete successfully in today's evolving global economy.

The visit underscores the growing national focus on skills acquisition and technical education as critical pillars for youth empowerment, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
