The Federal Government has commenced testing a Computer-Based Testing (CBT) system for the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for admission into Federal and State Technical Colleges, marking a significant step toward the digital transformation of Nigeria’s examination system.
The pilot exercise, conducted alongside the nationwide entrance examination, was introduced to assess the readiness of candidates, examination centres, and technological infrastructure ahead of a wider implementation in future examination cycles.
According to education authorities, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise assessment processes, improve examination integrity, and gradually transition from the traditional paper-based format to a fully digital testing system.

The ministry’s director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
The statement reads that the examination was held nationwide and conducted smoothly across centres, including Federal Technical College, Orozo, and Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja.
The Director of Technology and Science Education, Mrs Patricia Ogungbemi, who represented the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, monitored the exercise and encouraged candidates to embrace technical and vocational education as a pathway to self-reliance, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment.
“A major feature of the exercise was the pilot CBT session conducted after the conventional examination. The initiative was designed to assess readiness for the future transition to a fully computer-based examination system.
“The successful conduct of both exercises underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to digital transformation, assessment integrity, and quality technical education,”
The CBT test was specifically designed to evaluate the efficiency and reliability of the digital platform in the technical education admission process. Officials noted that findings from the exercise would help identify areas for improvement, including ICT infrastructure, candidate preparedness, and centre capacity.

The Federal Government has consistently highlighted the importance of technical and vocational education in tackling unemployment and closing the country's skills gap. The introduction of CBT into technical college admissions is seen as a key component of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the education sector through technology-driven solutions.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive move toward aligning Nigeria’s examination system with international best practices. However, they also stressed the need for sustained investment in digital infrastructure and capacity building to ensure a successful nationwide rollout.
If fully implemented, the CBT system could usher in a new era of faster, more secure, and technology-driven examinations across Nigeria's educational landscape.
