Borno State Government Pays ₦565.7m WASSCE, NABTEB, and SISE Fees for 28,789 Borno Students

The Borno State Government has released ₦565.7 million to cover the 2026 examination fees of 28,789 students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and the Senior Islamic Studies Examination (SISE).

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum announced the intervention through the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, during the symbolic presentation of cheques held on Friday at the Ministry's Work Hub Quality Assurance Office in Maiduguri.

The commissioner said the payment covers candidates writing WASSCE, NABTEB, and SISE, noting that the state's sustained support has transformed examination administration in public schools.

"Today, public school students receive their examination results at the same time as their counterparts in private schools, promoting fairness and equal opportunity," Wakilbe said.

He explained that the administration has continued to reduce the financial burden on parents by subsidising external examination registration fees for eligible students in public schools.

"The Borno State Government continues to subsidise 75 per cent of WASSCE and SISE registration fees, and 70 per cent of NABTEB fees, for eligible students in public schools," he said.

Wakilbe also disclosed that students of Higher Islamic Colleges are benefiting from the government's examination fee support for the first time through the Senior Islamic Studies Examination (SISE).

According to him, the initiative is part of Governor Zulum's commitment to expanding access to quality education and integrating the Sangaya education system into Borno's mainstream education framework.

"This initiative aligns with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum's vision of formally integrating the Sangaya education system into Borno's mainstream education framework, ensuring that every child, irrespective of educational background, has equal opportunity to succeed," he stated.

The commissioner revealed that since Governor Zulum assumed office in 2019, the state government has spent ₦4.71 billion on external examination fees, benefiting 193,963 students across Borno State.

He added that the sustained investment has eliminated the long-standing delay in the release of examination results for public school candidates, allowing them to receive their results alongside students in private schools.

Speaking on behalf of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Officer-in-Charge of the Maiduguri Office, Dr. A. I. Akanimoh, commended the governor for the timely release of the funds.

"The intervention reflects the administration's unwavering commitment to education and will enable thousands of students to sit for their examinations without financial constraints," Akanimoh said.

During the event, the state government also made a symbolic presentation of cheques to the examination bodies.

Wakilbe disclosed that ₦4.58 million was paid for NABTEB, while ₦3.03 million was released for the Senior Islamic Studies Examination. The remaining amount covers payments for WASSCE candidates.

In a related development, Governor Zulum commissioned and handed over a newly completed permanent office complex for the National Examinations Council (NECO) in Maiduguri.

Represented by Wakilbe at the ceremony, the governor said the new office occupies a 4,500-square-metre site within the premises of Mustapha Umar El-Kanemi Azhar College along the Maiduguri–Jos Road.

According to the commissioner, the facility, donated by the Borno State Government, is expected to strengthen examination administration and improve educational service delivery across the state.
