The Federal Government, through Tunji Alausa, has declared a major victory in its ongoing efforts to restore the credibility of Nigeria's public examination system, announcing that question leakages in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations have been eliminated through new education reforms.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this during his speech at the maiden convocation ceremony of Miva Open University held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Lagos.
According to the minister, the introduction of computer-based testing (CBT) and a hybrid examination model has drastically reduced examination malpractice while ending the long-standing problem of leaked examination questions.
"We initiated major examination reforms to adopt computer-based testing and a hybrid examination system. I can definitely report to you that the pervasive cheating that pervaded WAEC and NECO is now a thing of the past. Within just one year, we have brought it down to zero."
Alausa explained that examination question leakages had become a recurring challenge over the years, often reaching government officials before candidates even sat for the papers.

"Just last year, whenever WAEC examinations were being conducted, I would wake up with palpitations because my colleague, the Minister of State for Education, would send messages informing me that the questions for a particular subject had already leaked."
He added:
"I would forward them to the WAEC Head of National Office and ask whether they were genuine questions, and the response would often be, 'Honourable Minister, I'm sorry, it is true.'"
The minister noted that the widespread leakages created an unfair environment for students who intended to write their examinations honestly, as many felt pressured to engage in malpractice simply to remain competitive.
"When questions leak before examinations, even students who want to do the right thing are pressured into doing the wrong thing. That was the reality for decades."

He attributed the progress to deliberate government interventions aimed at protecting the integrity of national examinations.
"Today, because we are determined to protect the integrity of our examination system, we have stopped examination malpractice in WAEC and NECO for the first time in the last seven years."
According to Alausa, the examination reforms form part of the broader Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative being implemented under the administration of President Bola Tinubu to improve learning outcomes and strengthen confidence in the country's education system.
He also disclosed that the Federal Executive Council recently approved amendments to the Universal Basic Education framework as part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria's education sector.
