FINAL YEAR PROJECT TOPICS

We all know the saying; “THE HIGHER YOU GO, THE TOUGHER IT BECOMES”, well that is exactly how it is in higher institutions. With every level a student progresses to in a higher institution, comes extra academic responsibilities. Getting to the final year of your undergraduate studies, there is a list of obligations you must pay particular attention to in other to graduate with the best grade possible.  The final-year project is at the top of the list because the grade unit for just the final-year project accounts for 30% or more of the total Cumulative Grade Point (CGP) for that semester.

Scoring an 'A' grade in your final year Project will leave your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) strengthened, likewise, scoring an ‘E’ or ‘F’ grade will weaken your CGPA. This is why every final-year student needs to be properly informed on choosing the right project topic and how to carry out the project.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PROJECT TOPIC

Being able to come up with a good, interesting, and captivating project topic does just make your work progress faster, it also earns you 10% of the overall grade. It is not enough to just pick any topic, your topic has to be of interest to you and make you want to go further in your research in other for you to do an outstanding job. Here are a few tips on how to choose the right project topic;

  1. Choose topics that address problems in your immediate environment: you contribute to the growth, and development of society and create an opportunity to practice your field of study when you pick topics that address issues in your community. In addition to solving problems, you can decide to build a company with the solutions you came up with to solve problems within your environment.
  2. Use previous students project research in your field of study as references: majority of the time, research done by past students includes recommendations for more study. Due to limitations like time, money, or insufficient resources, it's possible that the research project wasn’t completed by the student. You might choose to pick up where the initial researcher left off in your own research. Libraries at schools, departmental archives, and websites with project materials are all good places to get information regarding research projects done by prior students.
  3. A country's recent history or recurring events can be a very good project topic: Strike action fuel subsidy removal, terrorist attacks by Boko Haram, assaults by Fulani herders, and other related issues are excellent project topics. Due to the originality of the study and the fact that you are simultaneously offering answers to widespread issues, these types of topics will get you high grades. Press releases, interviews, and newspapers should all be included as sources while researching current occurrences.
  4. Create original subject matter: Some project topics have been discussed repeatedly in writing. Consider topics that haven't been discussed all that often and make an effort to choose an area that interests you.
  5. Ensure the topic is not too broad: narrow your topic to something manageable. If your topic is too broad, you will find too much information and not be able to focus on a specific area. Background reading can help you choose and limit the scope of your topic.

Now the topic for the project has been chosen, the next thing is to begin carrying out the research. This is the part that gets a number of students confused and unsettled; where to begin and how to go about it. Below is a step-by-step guideline on how you can carry out your project research to get meaningful and effective results;

Step 4: Evaluate your sources

Step 5: Data Collection
