DIETETICS – FIELD OF STUDY

As a developing nation, Nigeria is deficient of some crucial resources in various aspects. This inadequacy does not just affect the economical state of the nation, it also affects the Educational standard of the nation. Lack of sophisticated learning tools and unavailability of professionally qualified Teachers/Lecturers are part of the demerits of a developing nation.

Focusing on the University level, many students have been forced to opt for courses which are of no interest to them, not because they didn’t make the right grades to qualify them for the course, but because of the unavailability of their course of interest in their various choice of institution.

For instance Dietetics and Nutrition, this is a field of study that is of interest to quite a number of students not just because of its employment opportunities, but beacause it also offers numerous personal benefits. It is a sub discipline of Medicine. It is the science that focuses on everything related to food and its effect on our health and overall wellbeing. Nutritionists and dietitians aim to improve people's health and help them make better dietary choices. With the increasing rate of health conditions/problems, Dietitians and Nutritionists are currently being sort after, thereby increasing the students interest in the course of study.

The department of Dietetics and Nutrition is not present in many higher institutions in Nigeria due to the unavailability of qualified professionals to handle the course in various institutions. While institutions that have the department present in them have very exorbitant tuition fees.
