The initiative for COWBELLPEDIA begun in 1998 as Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC), which was a written examination. The competition was held in Lagos state and was expanded to incorporate all Nigeria secondary school students in 2001.
In 2015, the initiative took a different dimension when it was split into two stages. The first stage is the Qualifying Examination (written exam in designated centers across the country) and the second stage is the TV quiz competition.
The competition was held annually for students in JSS3 and SSS2, with a mandate for mixed schools to have a minimum of two female students in each category. At the end of the competition, the best students are rewarded with different prizes; the winner goes with a total sum of 2,000,000 naira while the first and second runners up go with 1,500,000 naira and 1,000,000 naira respectively.
HOW THE COMPETITION WAS SUSPENDED
The competition went on for several years until 2020, when it was abruptly suspended by the sponsors; Promasidor Nigeria Limited. During the registration for the 2020 competition which commenced on the 1st of January and lasted for a week, the portal shutdown without prior notice to any of the participating schools, individuals and the general public. Days and weeks went by with no word from the organizers about the competition, giving rise to questions and speculations on why the competition was suspended. This prompted Promasidor to issue a notice on their official Facebook page on 12th of February 2020, indicating that the competition was being revamped for a better experience. Thus far, we are yet to witness another educating and entertaining Math competition from Promasidor, so the question now is; HAVE WE SEEN THE LAST OF COWBELLPEDIA?, WILL THE COMPETITION GO ON? Well, only the organizers have the answer to the question, we can all keep our fingers crossed and hope the competition is reinstated soonest.
