TRCN Commences Implementation of Federal Government Policy on School Accreditation for Public Examinations

The media unit of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) reports that the registration body has commenced the implementation of the Federal Government’s policy linking school accreditation for public examinations to teachers’ TRCN certification.

The policy, issued on 11th September, 2025 by Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, directs that from 2027, accreditation of both public and private secondary schools for the conduct of public examinations—including WASSCE, NABTEB, NECO, and NBIAS—will be strictly tied to TRCN registration and licensing of teachers.

“Effective from March 2027 for WASSCE, May 2027 for NABTEB, June 2027 for NECO, and June 2027 for NBIAS, any school whose teachers are not duly registered and licensed with the TRCN shall be disqualified from serving as an examination centre,” Dr. Alausa stated in the directive addressed to the Registrar/Chief Executive of TRCN.

He further directed state governments to put in place measures to ensure compliance by all teachers in state-owned and private secondary schools within the two-year transition period. Compliance will be monitored, with schools expected to achieve a minimum compliance rate of 75 per cent by 2026 and 100 per cent by 2027.

To support implementation, TRCN conducted a pilot exercise of its Compliance Management Information System (CMIS) on 2nd and 3rd June, 2026, in selected public and private schools in Kubwa and Nyanya, FCT. The system will undergo evaluation to inform necessary modifications ahead of nationwide rollout, in line with the Minister’s directive.

Dr. Ronke Soyombo, Registrar of TRCN, was represented at the exercise by Dr. Mary Ogbene Abah, Acting Director of Compliance and Enforcement. According to the Registrar, CMIS was developed to enhance data management, monitoring, and reporting for compliance activities related to teacher registration and licensing nationwide.

“This pilot exercise aims to test the functionality and adoption of the newly developed CMIS for compliance monitoring purposes,” she said.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Barde Yusuf, Principal of Government Secondary School, Phase III, Kubwa, noted that the Federal Government’s policy would raise service delivery standards. He also commended TRCN for updating its portal to ensure seamless online registration and certification, which he said is preferred by most teaching candidates.

As part of the exercise, TRCN teams engaged schools on the importance of safeguarding in educational institutions and distributed wristbands bearing a toll-free hotline to enable students and teachers to report incidents of injustice directly to the Council.
