The Kano State Government has once again earned national recognition from the National Examinations Council (NECO), receiving an Award of Excellence for its remarkable commitment to sponsoring and registering candidates for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The award was presented during the grand finale of NECO’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, where Kano emerged as the second-best-performing state in candidate sponsorship and registration across the country.
According to the Kano State Ministry of Education, the recognition was based on the state's consistent support for students during the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions, during which thousands of candidates were sponsored to participate in the SSCE.
The Director of Public Enlightenment of the Ministry, Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, disclosed that the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Haruna Makoda, received the award on behalf of the state government.

Speaking on the achievement, Makoda described the award as a reflection of Kano State's unwavering commitment to educational development and equal access to examination opportunities.
“This award is a result of hard work and perseverance demonstrated by the state government and its resolve to prioritise education as the foundation for sustainable development in Kano society,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the state government had consistently allocated resources over the past two years to ensure that eligible students were not denied the opportunity to sit for NECO examinations due to financial challenges.

He dedicated the award to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, teachers, students, and education stakeholders whose collective efforts contributed to the state's success.
Makoda further assured residents that the government would continue its sponsorship programme, stressing that education remains a key pillar of the administration’s development agenda.
He explained that the recognition aligns with Kano’s broader education reform initiatives and emergency recovery plan aimed at improving learning outcomes, expanding access to education, upgrading infrastructure, and supporting vulnerable groups, particularly adolescent girls and young people.
