JAMB NEWS: Court Stops JAMB from Restricting Underage Students.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been given a restraining order by the Delta State High Court in Warri to stop restricting underaged students from securing admission into any institution of their choice.
We can recall that, a few months back, JAMB made a policy that only children within the age of 18 would be considered eligible for the 2024/2025 admission.
However, the same exam board, JAMB, issued a sequel update on October 16, stating that only candidates who will be 16 years old by August 2025 will be admitted to tertiary institutions.
Following the going back and forth of the age policy regulation by JAMB, a former Nigerian Bar Association chairman, Warri branch by the name John Aikpokpo-Martins was however dissatisfied by this directive, and as such, he dragged the admission board to court.
The court case was filed on behalf of candidates born between September 1, 2009, and December 31, 2009, who successfully passed their JAMB examinations this year. The case, labeled W/311/FHR/2021, has JAMB and Edwin Clark University as the respondents.

NOTE THAT: The applicant also prayed the court to issue “An order of interim injunction restraining the respondents from withdrawing the admission given to Angel Aikpokpo Martins and/or restricting her rights and privileges and/or preventing her access to school and all educational facilities of the 2nd respondent institution as a student pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion.”
In a ruling court sitting delivered on Thursday, Justice Anthony Akpovi granted all the reliefs sought by the applicant, as confirmed by a Certified True Copy (CTC) obtained, thus ensuring that all relevant candidates retain their admissions while the case is pending, specifically situation of Angel Aikpokpo Martins, one of the affected students.

Justice Olotu emphasized that the rights of Nigerian children within the specified age range, who passed the JAMB exams, must be preserved. The ruling maintains that the admissions list before JAMB’s circular from October 16 remains in effect, and the court also granted permission for an accelerated hearing of the case.
