The Oyo State Government has expressed concern over the repeated delays recorded in the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), urging the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to take immediate steps to prevent further disruptions.
The state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, said the government was disturbed by reports that candidates across several examination centres in the state were subjected to unnecessary hardship due to the late arrival of examination materials.
According to him, verified reports indicated that question papers for Government (Objective) and Agricultural Science (Practical), scheduled for Thursday, June 4, failed to reach many centres at the expected time.
The commissioner disclosed that the examination materials reportedly arrived at some centres around 6:30 p.m., making it impossible for candidates to begin the examinations as scheduled.

He noted that the delays left students stranded for hours and exposed them to avoidable stress, anxiety, and security concerns.
Olayiwola further revealed that some centres in Ogbomoso and Saki were still conducting the Government (Objective) paper as late as 8:11 p.m., while candidates were yet to commence the Agricultural Science Practical examination slated to follow.
The commissioner said the incident was not isolated, recalling that a similar challenge occurred on June 3 when Mathematics (Objective) question papers were allegedly delivered in inadequate quantities to several centres, resulting in prolonged delays that stretched examination activities into the night.

He explained that officials of the ministry contacted WAEC's zonal office over the development and were informed that the delays were caused by logistical difficulties.
While acknowledging that WAEC operates as an international examination body beyond the direct control of the state government, Olayiwola appealed to the council to strengthen its operational arrangements to avoid a recurrence.

The commissioner specifically urged WAEC to consider postponing any examination paper that cannot be delivered to centres before 4:00 p.m. on the scheduled day, rather than compelling candidates to sit examinations late into the evening.
He said such a measure would help protect students' welfare, reduce anxiety among parents and guardians, and ensure a more conducive examination environment.
Reaffirming its commitment to quality education, the Oyo State Government assured residents that it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders to safeguard the welfare, safety, and academic success of students across the state.
