WAEC Warns Schools Against Illegal Charges, Threatens Sanctions.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cautioned schools, supervisors, and examination officials against imposing unauthorised charges on candidates, describing the practice as unethical, illegal, and damaging to the credibility of its examinations.
In a statement issued on Monday by the council's Public Affairs Department and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC said it had received reports of candidates being compelled to pay money under various pretexts, including script transportation, welfare packages, and administrative fees.
The examination body expressed particular concern over reports that some schools were demanding payment for KAPEK calculators despite the fact that the calculators had been supplied free of charge to candidates across the country.

The council directed school proprietors, principals, supervisors, and invigilators to immediately stop collecting money from candidates or their parents on behalf of examination officials.
“Immediate reports of any extortion attempt should be made to the Zonal Coordinator or Branch Controller, or via publicaffairs@waec.org.ng and hnowaeclagos@yahoo.co.uk. No harassment or intimidation of candidates in any form will be tolerated,” the council stated.
WAEC urged members of the public to report any cases of extortion through its designated communication channels, assuring candidates of protection from any form of coercion before, during, or after examinations.

The council further warned that individuals or institutions found engaging in such practices could face severe disciplinary measures, including derecognition, blacklisting, prosecution, and referral to relevant authorities.
