During an interview session on channels TV, the honorable minister for education, Prof. Tahir Mamman disclosed that no candidate under the age of 18 will be allowed to participate in the 2025/2026 SSCE examinations, be it WAEC or NECO.
This statement was made and taken into consideration after the federal government banned under 18 candidates from writing the JAMB UTME examination in 2025.
The minister revealed that the Federal Government has directed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), responsible for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and the National Examinations Council (NECO), which conducts the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), to enforce an 18-year minimum age requirement for candidates taking these exams.

HE SAID:
“We are not actually coming up with new policies contrary to what some people are saying. We are just reminding people of what is existing. In any case, NECO and WAEC will not be allowing underage children to write their examinations. In other words, if somebody has not spent the required number of years in that particular level of study, will not be allowed either NECO or WAEC.
“It’s not a matter of age. It’s a matter of the years spent at each level of education,” Mamman added.
