The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has condemned the West African Examinations Council over reports that candidates writing the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination were kept at examination centres until late into the night in parts of the South-West region of Nigeria.
NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, in a statement issued on behalf of the association, described the situation as unacceptable and a sign of poor planning on the part of examination authorities.
"It is both appalling and condemnable that young Nigerians, who had already endured months of preparation and the mental rigours associated with external examinations, were subjected to unnecessary hardship," Afeez said.
The student group argued that no logistical difficulty should justify keeping candidates at centres beyond reasonable hours or exposing them to unsafe conditions on their way home.
NANS also raised concerns that the incident happened in a region that has recently recorded cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities, saying the late dismissal of students put them at unnecessary risk.

The association said the situation amounted to a violation of students' rights to dignity, personal liberty, and security under the Nigerian constitution, and called on WAEC and relevant government agencies to take responsibility and prevent a repeat of the incident.
WAEC has faced heavy criticism on social media since Monday, June 2, when candidates reportedly waited several hours before sitting the Physics Essay and Objective papers, which had been scheduled for 2pm and 3:30 pm, respectively.
The disruptions continued on Wednesday when the General Mathematics Objective paper started as late as 6:30pm in some centres and 8:30pm in others. Many students did not finish until after 10pm.
On Thursday, June 4, videos circulating on social media showed candidates writing under poor lighting conditions at centres where examinations had not begun by 8pm.

NANS called on WAEC to carry out a full review of its examination logistics and put proper contingency arrangements in place so that student welfare and safety are given priority in all future examinations. The association warned that students must not be made to suffer for administrative failures or institutional negligence.
