The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), with the collaboration and support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has come out to disagree with the recent changes that have been made to the minimum age requirements for candidates who will participate in the SSCE examination.
You can recall that examguide.com had earlier made a publication which states that the federal ministry of Nigeria won’t permit students under the age of 18 to write NECO, and WAEC Exams in 2025.
Dr. Mike Ene, the secretary general to NUT in an interview session, showed an opposing concern over the policy, stating that societal changes, such as early enrollment in crèches due to economic pressures, make it irrational to impose strict age restrictions on education.
He also said that;
“The only way this policy could work is if it’s implemented from the foundation. Things have changed; due to economic pressures, parents enroll their children in crèches early, where they begin learning quickly. You can’t stop them from learning because the brain is structured to keep developing—once learning stops, the brain stagnates.”
During an interview session on channels TV, the honorable minister for education, Prof. Tahir Mamman disclosed that no candidate under the age of 18 will be allowed to participate in the 2025/2026 SSCE examinations, be it WAEC or NECO.
This statement was made and taken into consideration after the federal government banned under 18 candidates from writing the JAMB UTME examination in 2025.
