The crisis surrounding the recently released West African Examinations Council 2026 results for school candidates has deepened following allegations of glitches and irregularities by an official of the examination body.
The Head of Examinations at the WAEC office covering Anambra State, Olanrewaju Fadehan, made the allegations in a video that has circulated widely online.
Fadehan claimed that candidates who took the computer-based version of the examination were among those affected by problems associated with the conduct and processing of the examination.
According to him, the issues became noticeable around the time WAEC was expected to release the 2026 WASSCE results. He said the results were initially expected to be released between August 3 and 5, 2026, but that the process was delayed due to what he described as “last-minute adjustments.”
“Obviously, there was a problem because the press was eagerly waiting on Monday, the scheduled date. There was a need to quickly do some last-minute adjustments. Something was wrong.”
The WAEC official alleged that the adjustments had an impact on candidates who sat for the computer-based examination, particularly in subjects including Mathematics, English Language and Igbo.

He also questioned the reported performance of candidates in Igbo, expressing concern that some students in the South-East performed poorly in a language widely spoken across the region.
Fadehan further alleged that the controversy had affected not only candidates but also schools that invested heavily in facilities to support WAEC’s transition to computer-based examinations.
He claimed that some schools spent more than N60 million to establish Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in preparation for the examination.
“The call for a review this year is particularly disturbing, as it is alarming. Schools that subscribed to the CBT innovation of WAEC were badly hit. Some of them spent upwards of N60m and above to set up their CBT facilities.”
Another concern raised by Fadehan was the alleged failure to provide appropriate calculators to some candidates during the examination.
He claimed that the situation may have contributed to poor performance in Mathematics and other subjects where candidates needed calculators to carry out calculations.
Fadehan said he had raised concerns about the alleged irregularities during the examination and later submitted petitions to relevant authorities.
According to him, the complaints were brought before the WAEC Board, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examining Bodies, as well as the Minister of Education.

However, he alleged that his complaints were not adequately addressed. Instead, he claimed that he was subjected to disciplinary proceedings and subsequently placed on interdiction.
The WAEC official has now called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported performance of candidates, particularly those who took the computer-based examination.
“I call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to investigate the cause of failure of candidates, particularly those who chose the computer-based WAEC.”
Fadehan also raised allegations of financial impropriety against the management of WAEC, questioning issues relating to the supply of calculators, students’ identification cards and charges imposed on candidates and other users of the examination body’s services.
He urged the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to investigate the allegations and determine what happened during the conduct of the examination and the subsequent processing of the results.
The official stressed that maintaining the integrity of the WASSCE remains important, warning that any compromise in the examination process could have serious consequences for students whose admission and academic progression depend on their results.
