The management of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has again emphasized the age range required for the 2024/2025 JAMB admission for candidates seeking admission to any Nigerian tertiary institution.
This regulation was made following the increase in the number of underaged candidates who are upwardly adjusting age through age declarations on NIN slips being submitted by candidates, which is quite an unnecessary practice.
We understand that the candidates are falsifying their age just to gain admission, but it has become a worry to the exam body, JAMB, thus the call for enactment of the minimum age requirements for JAMB Admission in the 2024/2025 academic session.

Following the above-stated reasons, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has mandated that for any candidate to be considered eligible for admission in a Nigerian higher institution, the candidate must be at least SIXTEEN years (16) old at the time of admission.
So, therefore, it's pertinent to note that applicants from the age of 16 are considered eligible for admission in Nigeria, any candidate below the age is unarguably ineligible.
This directive came from the Chairman of the 2024 tertiary admission policy meeting and Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, as said by the board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin.
Mr. Fabian said that beginning from the 2025 academic session, the extant 6-3-3-4 on education will be enforced in Nigeria.
Here is what he said:
”The alarming avalanche of obviously false affidavits and upsurge of doctored upward age-adjustments on NIN slips being submitted to JAMB to upgrade recorded age is dangerous, inimical and unnecessary.”
He added that ”Only those below 16 would not and should not be admitted in accordance with the decision of the 2024 Policy Meeting,”
Mr. FABIAN further stated that "This position is informed by the discovery of widespread and unwholesome practice whereby some institutions collude with candidates to falsify vital details, such as backdated year of entry and subsequent age adjustments, to utilize certificates of genuine candidates with similar names to facilitate illegal admissions to enable participation of fake candidates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.”
