WAEC 2026: Amos Dangut Receives Confidence Vote as WAEC Union Tensions Deepen

The leadership of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has received a major boost after the Council’s Administrative and Finance Committee passed a vote of confidence in the Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, despite ongoing tensions with labour unions.

The endorsement was delivered during the Committee’s 240th meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where members commended the management team for maintaining operational stability and ensuring the smooth conduct of the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to the committee, WAEC management under Dangut demonstrated “exemplary leadership” and professionalism in handling the Council’s affairs, especially at a time when sections of the workforce have continued to express grievances over welfare and administrative issues.

The development comes amid an industrial dispute involving members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), who recently suspended a three-day protest but renewed demands for Dangut’s removal as Head of National Office.

Union leaders accused WAEC management of unfair labour practices, poor welfare conditions, and failure to address concerns relating to promotions, staff upgrades, and disciplinary procedures. The union also alleged that management ignored several of its demands after negotiations reportedly ended in a deadlock.

Despite the unrest, the WAEC committee expressed satisfaction with the Council’s ability to keep examinations running without disruption nationwide. Members noted that the management’s approach reflected institutional discipline, strategic focus, and commitment to WAEC’s core mandate.

The committee further warned against actions capable of damaging the reputation and integrity of the examination body, reaffirming its support for the current leadership.

In recent weeks, Dangut has also reiterated WAEC’s commitment to improving examination credibility through reforms such as computer-based testing, digital verification systems, and enhanced security measures against malpractice.

Dr. Dangut, who joined WAEC in 1998 and rose through the ranks before becoming Head of National Office, has overseen several technological and administrative reforms within the Council in recent years.
