The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has sponsored the registration of 500 inmates for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) while providing vocational starter packs and financial support to three former inmates as part of efforts to strengthen rehabilitation and reintegration.
The initiative was carried out by the NCoS Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, in partnership with the Luchi Advocate Foundation, in line with the correctional service's rehabilitation agenda, which aims to equip inmates and ex-inmates with education and vocational skills for life after incarceration.
The empowerment programme, held in Abuja, saw the beneficiaries receive starter packs based on the vocational skills they acquired during their stay in correctional facilities. The items distributed included sewing machines, chemicals, and equipment for producing liquid soap and cosmetics, among other trade tools designed to help them establish sustainable livelihoods.
Founder and Chairperson of the Luchi Advocate Foundation, Mrs. Oluchi Vivian Uche, said the intervention was driven by the belief that rehabilitation should not end when inmates leave correctional facilities.
According to her, empowering former inmates with practical skills and business tools would help reduce the likelihood of reoffending while enabling them to become productive members of society.

"We believe in protecting lives, restoring hope and reducing crime through empowerment," she said, noting that the foundation remains committed to supporting rehabilitation initiatives that create lasting social impact.
As part of the programme, the foundation also announced the sponsorship of WAEC registration fees for 500 inmates across custodial centres under the FCT Command.
Uche described education as a vital component of rehabilitation, stressing that giving inmates access to formal education improves their chances of successful reintegration after serving their sentences.
The Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Peter Jen, commended the Luchi Advocate Foundation for supporting the reform agenda of the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.

He noted that the organisation had previously donated food items and relief materials to inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kuje and Suleja and had now extended its intervention to discharged inmates transitioning back into society.
Jen urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the support provided and become responsible citizens capable of inspiring others through positive conduct.
The Nigerian Correctional Service said the initiative aligns with its broader strategy of strengthening offender rehabilitation, enhancing public safety and promoting sustainable reintegration through partnerships with private organisations and non-governmental groups.
