Beyond Darkness: Four Visually Impaired Nigerians Redefining Possibility Through UTME Success

Beyond Darkness: Four Visually Impaired Nigerians Redefining Possibility Through UTME Success

In a country where persons living with disabilities often battle stigma, limited access to education, and social exclusion, four students of the Federal Nigeria School for the Blind, Lagos, are rewriting what is possible.

Despite losing their sight at different stages of life and enduring years of interrupted schooling, emotional hardship, and adjustment, they recently sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and recorded commendable performances. Their achievements go beyond scores. They reflect resilience, determination, and an unshaken belief in education as a pathway to dignity and independence.

Joshua Aduragbemi: “My eyes may be blind, but not my brain.”

At 30, Aduragbemi Joshua is chasing a long-delayed dream of studying Music at the University of Lagos. Scoring 243 in the UTME, he sees the result as validation rather than surprise.

Once mistaken for a “slow learner” due to undiagnosed vision problems, Joshua’s academic journey was repeatedly disrupted until his eventual sight loss. Schooling paused for years, but he found purpose in music, mastering the talking drum and trumpet while relying on the radio as his primary teacher.

Now, he hopes formal training will refine his talent and open doors. “My eyes may be blind, but not my brain,” he says, describing music as both calling and therapy. His message is simple: society must invest in accessible education and assistive technology for the visually impaired.

Akinnuoye Oluwafisayomi: Learning to live again

At 19, Akinnuoye Oluwafisayomi’s world changed after a rare medical condition led to partial blindness in 2024. Once a typical teenager with academic ambitions, she suddenly faced fear, isolation, and mobility challenges following brain-related complications and surgery.

With a UTME score of 207, she now hopes to study Psychology at the university, inspired by her own emotional struggles. “I want to help people understand what is going on in their minds,” she says.

Her journey has been one of gradual recovery, learning to adapt, regain confidence, and return to education after moments of despair and dependence. Today, she advocates for greater support and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Bolaji Owolabi: A second chance at life and learning

At 35, Owolabi Wisdom Bolaji’s story is one of delayed but determined ambition. Diagnosed with glaucoma years after completing secondary school, he gradually lost his sight, and life slowed down dramatically.

After years away from formal education, he eventually enrolled at the Federal Nigeria School for the Blind. That decision changed his trajectory. Scoring 232 in his first UTME attempt, he emerged among the school’s top performers.

He now hopes to study Mass Communication or Political Science at the University of Lagos, driven by a desire to advocate for disability rights. “I want to be a voice for persons living with disabilities,” he says, urging stronger government support and more inclusive university systems.

Mouidiat Daramola: Turning struggle into advocacy

For 24-year-old Daramola Mouidiat, vision loss followed a childhood illness that gradually worsened her sight. Once aspiring to become a lawyer or doctor, she had to pause her academic journey and adjust to a new reality marked by difficulty in reading and learning.

After years at home learning tailoring, she eventually embraced a new opportunity at the Federal Nigeria School for the Blind. Rebuilding her education and confidence, she sat for the UTME and now dreams of studying Special Education.

“I want to help people with disabilities and stop them from feeling isolated,” she says. Her focus has shifted from personal ambition to advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment.

A shared message: ability beyond sight

Though their journeys differ in age, background, and circumstance, the four students share a common thread. Loss of sight did not end their dreams. Instead, it reshaped them.

Their stories highlight a broader reality in Nigeria. Disability is often compounded by lack of access, not lack of potential. Yet within these challenges, they stand as living proof that resilience, when supported by opportunity, can produce remarkable outcomes.

Beyond their UTME results lies a deeper truth. They are not defined by what they cannot see, but by what they continue to envision for themselves and others.
