JAMB 2026: Admissions Outside JAMB CAPS is Illegal - JAMB Registrar

Tertiary institutions across Nigeria have received a serious warning from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which states that "Institutions shouldn't grant admissions outside the Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS, as such practice is considered illegal.

The warning was given by Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, during the 2026 policy meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja on Monday, 11 May 2026, by the Board.

According to the registrar, some institutions are still going against the appropriate directives by the federal government by being involved in the act of issuing admission letters to candidates who had not been approved through CAPS.

Oloyede cited that such activity sabotages the admission process transparency, and sometimes candidates with high scores will be denied their due admission, while those with lower scores are being admitted.

To tackle this occurrence, the registrar added that disciplinary actions have already been initiated against affected institutions, and sanctions will be applied. Stating that a case involving 11 universities over alleged illegal admissions is currently before the court.

The registrar debunked the claims that candidates were posted outside their chosen examination towns, stating that investigations into the complaints confirmed that no candidate was posted outside his or her selected examination town.

He said that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) had reviewed the complaints.
